fashion trends of 2021
There's been a wave of new trends since the pandemic has started. Thanks to the popularity of tik tok trends and other social media influences, it feels almost like quarantine has made the trend cycle speed up 3x faster than usual. Since early 2020, trends have come and gone, some have quickly sizzled out whereas some do seem like they'll be around for a while. Here are some of my faves.
1. Wide-leg jeans. Long gone are the skinny jeans and jeggings that had plagued the nation for years. I remember the days (with disgust) in 2015 when the go-to fit was super-star sneakers, jeggings with holes, and a cropped color block sweatshirt with some sort of mesh component. In the years that followed, toned-down variations and specifically skinny jeans remained on the thrown. Finally, now, it seems that skinny jeans are out and most people own a pair or two of wide-leg jeans. Personally, I think that they are very flattering the way the high-waisted cinch travels down to loosen up starting around the knee. Wide-leg pants had always been popular long before in Asia, and I'm so glad I'll be able to wear them in the states as well now without receiving stares from teenagers at the checkout of a stop and shop.
2. Teeny-tiny sunglasses. Although celebrities like the Kardashians/Jenners have been wearing tiny sunglasses for a while now, square-shaped sunglasses or giant circle sunglasses still reigned among the general population. Although I do admit that it's getting tiring to see the same tiny black rectangular sunglasses from amazon everywhere, I love the new variations of sunnies people have been donning. I think the smaller fit is much chicer and people don't walk around looking like flies anymore.
3. Platform flip-flops. Although this is still debatable, I love this trend that has been revived from the early 2000s and I think that they are super fun. They give you height while letting your feet breathe in the hot weather and I especially love the fun colors people have been experimenting with.
4. Puffy sleeves. To be fair, puffy sleeves have been around for a while, but again, I could never imagine myself wearing them in the mid-2010s and they truly have become a staple. Stores have been pushing out crop tops, dresses, and even some long-sleeve tops with puffy sleeves and I'm all here for it. I think that they just bring a pop of life to an outfit and I personally wear a white, short-sleeved top version all the time.
5. Claw-clips. Claw, jaw whatever you call them these have also begun to plague the heads of teenage and young millennials everywhere. Now I hesitate to call this trend one of my faves because I think it truly depends on how you wear them. The other day at the mall I saw a girl pull her hair up into a bun and clip on a claw clip in a way that it completely stuck to her head and she looked like she was wearing a fish helmet of some sort. BUT, if people wear them in kind of a slightly loose, messy, "omg what I just pulled this together on my way-out" kind of way, I do think that they are a great, practical way to keep hair out of your face. Also, it's so funny to me that these are trendy now because they have been a staple for grandmas in Chinatown since forever.
6. Flare leggings. You don't understand, I'm obsessed. I realize yoga pants are very similar and I love them both (as long as it's not TOO flared). Similar to the way I find wide-leg jeans very flattering, this just seems like the softer, comfier version and I'm totally here for it. I feel like you could also wear them all year round because of how thin they are. In the winter you could just pair it with perhaps a collard sweatshirt and in the warmer weather, you could wear them with tank tops and cropped short sleeves or just baggy t-shirts. They go with pretty much anything and if you were just to do a simple 30-12-3 on the treadmill, you could wear them to work out as well. Thanks, Emma Chamberlain.
7. Gold jewelry. Growing up, silver jewelry was always the go-to and I have just recently made the shift to gold. I truly think that it pops out a lot better when you wear necklaces or earrings compared to silver jewelry. It's a great, easy way to elevate a simple black tank top ALTHOUGH, I have seen cases where there was wayyyyyy too much layering involved, and that kind of irks me. Instead, I love a simple gold necklace or small chain to compliment an outfit.
8. Converses. Converses have been in and out for decades and I remember them being cool then suddenly replaced by white sneakers. Finally, they have been making a comeback again and I'm excited that I can bring them out from the depths of my closet for revival. They obviously go great with jeans and truly, they are another item that can almost go with anything. Does anyone else remember when some sort of celebrity wore them with a dress on the red carpet years ago? Anyways, I love brown converses specifically and love the feel they can bring to an outfit.
All in all, 2020-2021 has brought us many new trends that I love, although I'm sure one day I'll look back and find them "cheugy".
